Peterborough Driving Instructors Social Club
(Incorporating Peterborough Driving Instructors Association)
History
Prior to 1964 the Driving Instruction Industry was unregulated although
many instructors belonged to trade associations such as the M.S.A.
(founded in 1935 just before the introduction of the Driving Test).
Members agreed to abide by a strict code of conduct of both Professional
and Ethical tuition. Also in 1935 with the introduction of the Driving
Test the R.A.C. formed the R.A.C. Register of Instructors to establish
the first partially recognised qualification for Driving Instructors.
Entry was subject to approval of references followed by passing
a practical examination of both driving and instructional abilities.
In 1964 the Ministry of Transport (MoT) introduced a voluntary
register, which became compulsory in 1970 (MoT ADI). Control of
the register passed to the Department of Environment and Instructors
became known as DoE ADI. Control was then passed back to the DoT
and Instructors became known as DTpADI. In 1990 the Driving Standards
Agency assumed control and later changed to the current title of
DSA ADI(car).
Before the Register became compulsory the MoT announced that they
would be introducing a separate theory test for learner drivers
(it only took 31 years to arrive) and it would probably have to
be class room based. It was at this time 1965 that about a dozen
local Driving Instructors got together at the Cock Inn Werrington
to see if they could arrange some premises to deliver the proposed
theory test which they could share. Amongst those present were John
Oakley, Mick Chapman, Ron Merrison, Cliff Bird,Dave Power and Ken
Wakefield. Knowing that they would need money for such a project
they decided the best way to raise it, and to bind them together,
was to arrange a series of social events in which they and their
families could participate. So P.D.I.S.C. was formed. Meeting were
later moved to the White Hart in Fletton then to the Ukrainian Club
in Dogsthrope. When it closed we moved to Dogs Thorpe Fire Station
and later to the Burghley Club then to Peterborough Sports and Leisure,
Then moved to Perkins Sports and social Club, Oxney Rd Eastfield.
We have now re-located to The Parkway club on maskew Ave near PC
World.
